Halloween is an annual celebration that takes place on October 31st. It is a fun way to dress up and trick or treat around the neighborhood.

Some people celebrate Halloween by dressing up in costumes and going out trick or treating. Others make decorations, such as haunted houses. Some people get really into the spirit of the holiday and make something called a “jack-o’-lantern.”

A few of the best towns to celebrate Halloween in the USA are Salem, Massachusetts; Sleepy Hollow, New York; and Atlanta, Georgia.

Salem is known for its witch trials and has many witch-themed attractions. Sleepy Hollow is home to the Headless Horseman and has many Halloween events. Atlanta is known as the Halloween Capital of the World and has many Halloween festivities.

Salem, Massachusetts

Salem, Massachusetts is one of the best places to visit for Halloween. This town has been known as the “haunted capital of America” since 1692 when the first witch trials took place. There are several haunted houses throughout the city that will give you a scare.

One of the things that makes Salem such a great place to visit for Halloween is the fact that it has been known as the “haunted capital of America” since 1692.

This means that there are several haunted houses throughout the city that will give you a scare. Some houses are old and have been around for many years, while others have been built recently. Some of the houses are based on famous stories, such as The Haunting of Hill House and The Addams Family.

Whether you are visiting for the first time or you are a veteran of the holiday, be sure to check out a haunted house in Salem!

Sleepy Hollow, New York

Sleepy Hollow is easily one of the best Halloween towns in the USA. See, this sleepy little hamlet is located in Westchester county and rose to fame when it was prominently featured it Washington Irving’s iconic tale, “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow”.

Since then, people have been hopping on a Hudson line MetroNorth train and riding it for 45 minutes from Grand Central Terminal to Tarrytown station.

Upon arrival, visitors can enjoy some of the best things to do in Sleepy Hollow, like visiting the Washington Irving house and paying homage to the author of this spooky tale.

However, if you really want to get into the spirit of the holiday, then grab some tickets well in advance for The Great Jack O’Lantern Blaze.

Halloween-themed treats

Yes this event is popular and yes tickets regularly sell out and yes it will be crowded. But, it is a truly amazing, one-of-a-kind experience since you’ll get to stroll through a labyrinth filled with upwards of 7,000 hand-carved pumpkins that are built to resemble dinosaurs, cars, trucks, and more. Plus, they have great Halloween-themed treats on offer too, like warm apple cider and cider donuts too.

Then, if you’re feeling super brave embark on a guided night tour of the Sleep Hollow Cemetary. During your visit, you’ll be able to see where historic figures like Washington Irving and Andrew Carnegie were laid to rest. Just don’t leave without looking inside the old Dutch Reformed Church here and grabbing a photo op with the giant Headless Horsman statue on Route 9.

And if you really love unique architecture, be sure to take a Halloween themed tour of the Armour-Stiner House. Not only is it a pastel pink, Victorian home that is shaped like an octagon, but it has a gorgeous interior with cool themed rooms like the Egyptian room.

Atlanta, Georgia

If you’re looking for somewhere unique to spend Halloween in the USA, you should definitely head to Atlanta for a weekend trip!

Atlanta is one of the top locations in the country for film and television. AMC’s The Walking Dead is filmed here, so the city especially loves to celebrate zombies during Halloween. Throughout October, many downtown bars host Zombie Pub Crawls. A ticket will gain you admission to the event, zombie face-painting by professional makeup artists, and a free drink from every bar.

Film set tours are another popular activity during Halloween in Atlanta. There are a variety of different tours to choose from, but each will provide you with transportation to beloved filming locations for Atlanta shows such as Stranger Things and The Walking Dead. You’ll learn behind-the-scenes secrets and have the opportunity to take photos to bring home as souvenirs.

If ghost stories are more your idea of fun, you can attend the Capturing the Spirit of Halloween event at Oakland Cemetery–Atlanta’s oldest park. This event is so popular that tickets sell out every single year.

When you get hungry, eat at the Vortex in Little Five Points. The exterior of the building is shaped like a creepy skeleton skull, and they serve the best burgers in town! If you have kids, Little Five Points is also a popular place to take them trick-or-treating.

If you’re feeling brave, stay at Atlanta’s famous haunted hotel–Ellis Hotel! It’s located downtown and is conveniently close to the city’s top attractions!

Disney World, Florida

Without a doubt Disney World is one of the best Halloween towns in the entire United States.

Because while everyone assumes that Halloween at Disney basically consists of just Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party, this park really has so much more to offer visitors around this magical time of year.

However, if you do want to attend Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party, book tickets ASAP since this event regularly sells out. Also, use the crowd calendar to figure out the best time to go. Because the closer you get to Halloween the more crowded the park tends to get.

Halloween decor

Thankfully though, Disney World starts to come alive with vibrant Halloween decor starting in August. And the best place to see magical fall decor and ghoulish pumpkins is the Magic Kingdom. It’s easily the most well-decorated park and not to be missed during Halloween.

Although, if you’re on a budget and don’t want to spend a ton of money, then you can see incredible Halloween decor for free at Disney Springs. Highlights include giant Mickey Mouse Pumpkins for magical photos.

And if you love dressing up as your favorite Disney character then Halloween is the perfect time to visit the park since this is the only time of year when adults can fully dress in character at Disney. So, take advantage of this fact and wear the Disney-inspired costume of your dreams. Just be sure to read up on the rules since they are quite specific.

Also, Disney at Halloween gets extra megical because you can get a free dining plan when you purchase a non-discounted 5-night/6-day vacation package at this time of year. The packages must include a room at a select Disney Resort hotel and ticket with a Park Hopper Option to be eligible but this is a great deal and reason alone to visit at this time of year.

Salt Lake City

Salt Lake City is one of the best Halloween towns in the USA.  Seriously, the whole month of October is filled with fun and creepy venues.  It is a great place to visit and enjoy the Halloween season.

To start your visit, you will want to stay in a haunted hotel, right?  Just north of Salt Lake City is the perfect place.  The Ben Lomond Suites has a few ghosts ready to greet you.  The haunted rooms are 1101 and 1102.  Beware of the elevator that spontaneously travels from floor to floor.

If you like the darker side of Halloween, Salt Lake City has some amazing haunted forests and haunted houses. The Castle of Chaos and the Fear Factory have been recognized by the Travel Channel and USA Today as some of the scariest haunted houses in America.

If haunted houses are not your thing you can check out one of the many pumpkin patches in Utah.  Each of these venues typically offers corn mazes, games, shows, bounce houses, and food trucks.

Local attractions such as the aquarium, zoo, and amusement park (Lagoon) offer Halloween festivities for all ages.

There are so many fun Halloween activities in Salt Lake City, you will not be disappointed.
